ShiftShot Privacy Policy

ShiftShot is a Windows screenshot utility with no accounts, sign-in, telemetry, analytics, advertising or network features. It creates files on your computer, described below, and reports nothing back to us. This policy covers those files and any support email you choose to send.
What it stores on your computer
ShiftShot creates the following files locally:
Screenshots, in the folder you choose in Settings. If you enable the clipboard option, the image is also copied to your clipboard.
Your settings: save location, image format, hotkeys and similar preferences.
A log file, to help diagnose problems. It records what the app did, including the full path of each screenshot it saves and technical details of any errors. It keeps only the current and previous session.
Settings and logs are held in ShiftShot’s own folder inside your Windows user profile, protected by your Windows account permissions. ShiftShot does not transmit any of this. You can delete any of these files at any time. Uninstalling ShiftShot removes its settings and logs. It does not delete your screenshots, which stay in the folder you chose.
Diagnostic reports
The About dialog can generate a diagnostic report, the one file ShiftShot makes that is meant to leave your machine.
Created only when you ask for it, never in the background.
Contains the app’s log files, a summary of your app version, Windows version, display layout and settings, and a README describing the contents.
File and folder paths are removed and replaced with a placeholder, as are long token-shaped strings. Your save location is reported only as “default” or “custom”, never the path itself.
Never contains screenshots or captured images.
ShiftShot never uploads it. It is written locally for you to inspect, and every file in it opens in Notepad. You decide whether and how to share it.
It is saved as an ordinary ZIP file in your Windows temporary-files folder, protected by your Windows account permissions, and stays there until you or Windows removes it. Generating a new report also tries to delete earlier reports more than seven days old. “Show file” in the About dialog opens it in File Explorer so you can inspect or delete it yourself.
The report is generated for you to inspect. You can open every file in it with Notepad before deciding whether to send anything.
If you contact support
If you email the support address shown in the app, we receive whatever you send, including a diagnostic report if you attach one. We use it only to investigate your issue, never for marketing, and never sell it.
Email services carry and store that correspondence. We disclose it to no one else except where the law requires it. Their servers are in Switzerland and the European Economic Area, and because ShiftShot is published from the UK, storing it there counts as a transfer out of the UK under UK data protection law. Those jurisdictions are covered by UK adequacy regulations, so no further transfer safeguards are needed.
We keep correspondence while your issue is open and for up to 12 months afterwards, then delete it. You can ask us to delete it sooner.
Purchases
ShiftShot is sold through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft handles payment, billing and refunds, and ShiftShot never sees your payment details. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement for how Microsoft handles that information.
Children
ShiftShot is not directed at children, and reports nothing about any user back to us, children included. We do not knowingly seek children’s personal information through support. Contact us if you believe a child has sent us information and you want it deleted.
Your rights
The screenshots, settings and logs described above may contain personal information, but they stay on your computer under your control. We cannot access them, so there is nothing for us to hand over or erase. You can view, change or delete them yourself through Windows.
Support correspondence is different, because if you email us then we hold that email. Matt Theuma, ShiftShot’s UK-based publisher, is the data controller for it, so UK GDPR applies. The lawful basis is legitimate interests: answering a request you chose to send.
You can ask for a copy of that correspondence, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict how it is used, or object to us holding it, using the contact address below. These rights may be limited where the law allows. If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this policy
Any update is published at this address with a new “last updated” date. Material changes also appear in the app’s release notes.
